A humble tribute to a great singer of the zuliana bagpipe.
Enrique José Gotera Méndez, called “The Fabulous of the Bagpipe” and “Goterita”, was born in Maracaibo on September 24, 1939.
Composer, singer and quadrist, he has excelled in the bagpipe, in which he began in 1965, with Los Compadres del Écito achieving a resounding success with the theme of his own authorship, “The Skatadores”. He studied three years of law at the Universidad del Zulia, before working at the Transnational Shell and Terminals Maracaibo. He has also been a medical visitor, insurance producer, co-owner of the salon “Los Alisios” and publicist.
He entered Rincón Morales in 1966, where he won successes with “Remodelación del Saladillo”, “Acuarela lacustre”, “Chiquinquireña”, “Reflexes de mi Lago”, all original by Luis Ferrer.Fund o Los Fabulosos (1974-1975) and retired for personal reasons, until he joined La Montonera, in 1978; spent a season in Tropics del Éxito, in 1980, until his arrival at La Universidad de la Gaita (1981-1987), later called Universidad Todos Estrellas. He later joined El Show de la Gaita, where he stayed from 1988 to 1992.
He reappeared with VHG, in 1993 and then with the Profesionales de la Gaita, in 2002. He has won the most diverse regional and national awards. In October 1998 he offered a new CD, Colección de Oro de Gaitas, valuable record work that represents the selection of 19 of the 74 songs performed by this renowned singer-songwriter, including a single song by his author (The skaters), ten songs by Luis Ferrer and other songs by Luis Oquendo Delgado, Victor Hugo Márquez, Heriberto Molina, Renato Aguirre, Francisco Morales and Néstor Rincón, among those: “Watercolor lacustre”, “Reflections of my lake”, “Aurora diamantina”, “Remodeling”, “Nice hit”, “Longing”, “The real”, “Old Maracaibo”, “Chinita Chinata”, “Life continues” and “Village of waters”.
Other hits in the voice of Enrique Gotera have been “Patazos del Catatumbo”, “Tierra mia”, “Twilight”, “Genius and Lord Chiquinquireño”, “El eden dreamed”, “And Dad God, the Piper”, “Glory of God”, “Land of God”, “Bagpipe and Lira”, “Bagpipe and Lira”, “For a bouquet of flowers”, “Bagpipe, guitar and lira”, “Tierra marabina”, “Fiesta brava” and “Sueño bullfighter”; in addition to their interpretations of boleros with Enrique Atencio.
