Once upon a time, during a civil war in medieval times, a small village in which a Zen master lived.
One day, the news came to them that a fearsome general was heading in his direction to invade and take the area.
The day before the army arrived the whole village fled, with the exception of the elder master.
When the general arrived, after finding the village practically deserted and knowing about the existence of the old man, he ordered the Zen master to appear, but he did not.
The general quickly headed to the temple where the master rested.
Furious, the general pulled out his sword and approached it to his face, yelling at him that if he didn't realize he was just standing in front of those who could go through him in an instant..
With total tranquility, the old master replied that precisely the general was before someone who could be crossed in an instant..
The general, surprised and confused, ended up bowing him and leaving the place..

I believe this story might be seen as a metaphor for the moral superiority of attitudes that promote harmony and peace over those that encourage conflict and hatred
