During the Middle Ages, the noblemen scattered meadowsweet on the floor of their palaces and castles. The perfume of the plant supplanted less hygienic smells. Queen Elisabeth I called the spirea her favorite flower, which saved her from incessant headaches. And indeed this 'queen of meadows' has an analgesic effect because of the asperine-like substances present throughout the plant.

For the druids, the plant, in addition to the mistletoe, was one of the beloved plants in mystical rite of passage. The druids had some favorite herbs including the meadowsweet, watermint and iron hard. We also often find the plant in various recipes of the druids, especially in rituals where the plant, perhaps because of its sultry sweet scent, was used as a sacrifice.
