MEPPELER TOWER: again in a new (paint) jacket

#TORENVANMEPPEL 😍 The Meppeler Tower has been refurbished this summer. Since the end of April there has been a lot of work on the Meppeler Tower. The walls were inspected and refurbished and the painters put the finishing touches on the i. Once every seven years this work is carried out, which means that the church can now take it up until 2027.
Not only the church itself got a refresh, also the rooster was taken care of. The Copper #haan is treated with paint against oxidation, so that it does not rust. Bert Hulshoff of Barelds Schilderwerken today had the honor of putting the cock back on the tower.
The Meppeler tower is, like the Great #Kerk , a #Rijksmonument . The church was built in 1422. The tower also dates back to the fifteenth century, but the exact year of construction is unknown. Presumably it was built at the same time as the church.
In 1864, the tower was sold to the municipality for the symbolic amount of 1 guilder. The Meppeler tower is 45 meters high.
NICKNAME: Mosquitoes
The nickname for the inhabitants of Meppel is due to the Meppeler tower. The story goes that long ago residents would have seen the tower on fire on a sultry summer evening. When the fire brigade was ripped out and there was a large swarm of mosquitoes to fly the tower. Since then, residents of Meppel are also called Meppeler Mosquitoes. By the way, it is not known whether this story happened true.
