January 24 is World Moebius Syndrome Day. It is listed as a rare disease, discovered at the end of the 19th century (year 1884) by the German doctor Paul Julius Moebius.
It consists of congenital paralysis of the facial muscles and lack of movement in the eyes, caused by partial development of the cranial nerves 6th and 7th. It also affects other brain nerves that control motor functions, as well as some physical malformations in the tongue, jaw and other body members (hands and feet)
At the eyelid level, there is an involvement of the orbicular muscle, which is responsible for closing the eyelids, which is why patients should have eye care to avoid dryness injuries in the eye (wounds and/or corneal ulcers).
Treatment will be either with drops and ointments that help lubricate the eye, wet chambers or surgery to try to protect the balloon, depending on the case.
