My vegetable garden
I was the king too rich and proud after signing the deed of sale. Our house had a garden. Not just a garden, but behind a hedge a real vegetable garden. At least, the previous inhabitant had grown his lettuce and carrots here and there was a peach tree and there were some berry bushes.
My first work was to build some paths in the wasteland, even without mud feet, to make a tour of the various crops. Just before the berry bushes I laid out a small square, so we could sit in our own fruit corner with a drink.
Then I went to work. First of all, of course, some strawberry plants were put and I tried to sow simple crops. Radishes, lettuce, carrots, that kind of work. Every day I went to see if anything was beeping above the ground. That happened, but strangely, not exactly where I sowed. It soon became clear to me that something was wrong. Weeds! Right next to the seed it was very difficult to hoe that away so I took tweezers to let the uninvited guests fly with a bow to the compost heap. Because, there was, too. Delicious to finally pick and eat the first harvest!
In the next year I took things a bit bigger, there was a lot of guilders or euros to save with a decent vegetable garden. Except for radishes and lettuce, I sowed broad beans and pods. In another seed bed I had sown some cabbage varieties, white cabbage, red cabbage and cauliflower. That was a bit disappointing, there appeared to be all sorts of annoying bugs before me at the table.
