Si riscosse, turbata dalla strana visione. Forse aveva parlato a voce alta perché le donne si erano voltate e ora la stavano guardando in tralice, bisbigliando l’una all’orecchio dell’altra. Erano raggruppate dal lato opposto del pozzo. Come sempre, la tenevano a distanza oppure era lei che si allontanava, perché le trovava stupide, arroganti, e i loro discorsi vuoti l’annoiavano. Provava astio nei confronti di tutti i compaesani e sapeva di essere ricambiata.

She awoke, troubled by the strange vision. Perhaps she had spoken aloud because the women had turned and were now looking at her sideways, whispering to each other's ear. They were grouped on the opposite side of the well. As always, they kept her at a distance or it was she who distanced herself from them, because she found them stupid, arrogant, and their empty talk bored her. She felt hatred towards all the villagers and she knew she was reciprocated.
