National Monument in HASSELT: THE HOOGE HUYS

#RIJKSMONUMENT 😍 Hasselt is located on the Black Water near the mouth of the #Overijsselse Fight. The Black Water used to have an open connection with the #Zuiderzee . The first inhabitants settled on the higher sand ridges on the river side. The oldest parts of #Hasselt are still clearly recognizable by their higher location (Hoogstraat, Markt, Ridderstraat and Eiland). Due to its location at a junction of land and waterways, Hasselt became an important trading centre. Excavations have shown that people were already present in a part of Hasselt around 1000 BC.
