This is a self-proclaimed action week by various food producers, urging children and adults to “eat healthy” and leave unhealthy snacks. As part of the action week, manufacturers have launched the “Candy Good Box”. A box filled with “healthy sweets and snacks”. In practice, these processed and pre-packaged sweets are especially very sugary! There was also very little fresh fruit and vegetables in that box.

Children and adults in the Netherlands consume far too much sugar. Halfway through the year, we see foodwatch appear again and again the first Sugar Max days. These are dates when a certain age range already has its annual amount of sugar.

When does your sugar fall max day?

Popular children's drinks are pushing very young people over their sugar maximum quickly. Friday 9 July is the first “Sugar Max Day” of 2021: for children from 4 to 8 years. Small children have already reached their maximum annual amount of sugars, based on the advice of the World Health Organization. According to WHO, up to 10% of your daily amount of calories may consist of free sugars (these are added sugars plus sugars in fruit juices). Children from 4 to 8 years are almost double (1925%), so their Sugar Max Day also falls twice as early in the year. Generally, the younger, the bigger the sugar problem.
