Cicada shell

Have you ever seen a bug that looks like it is not moving? Just sitting there for hours, even days?

I have a new thing to share. This is not a bug, just an empty shell called exoskeleton or exuvia, how scientists call it. It remains behind after the insect transforms from the nymph stage into an adult.

Bugs that leave them are cicadas, family Cicadidae.

Picture was taken in Split, Croatia, by this humble scientist and nature enthusiast.

It frightens me a bit ... never see it.

@Henkjan de Krijger I the empty shells are really light, so a bit of rain or strong wind can wash them away. Also birds that think they are eating real insect and not light version of food. :) It is like a reminder that everything grows and changes...so it is not scary, more like...promising. 😁
