Never to forget!

AN ACT OF HEROISM forever engraved in our hearts. ♥

A lifesaver.

Finally, finally he is at the boat and his hand
clasps a rope with a miraculous saving force.
Yes with a grip, both literally and figuratively, never to let go
let him swim back with all his might.

Five very young children, powerless,
unprotected and drifting towards a situation
with really no chance.
The Oosterschelde with all its dangers, but especially its strength
movement almost deprived them of the last dance of life.

From the beach, on that sweltering last Saturday of August,
in a flash, you put some kind of puzzle in your head.
Anxiety, hesitation, consultation?
No, all of that was sedated in one fell swoop.

Action
It's almost impossible to comprehend,
you swam 500 meters against a very strong current and
you pulled a dinghy with as many as five children.
While swimming, you rescued
and managed to prevent their young death.

Only the last 50 meters offered a few,
“woke” bystanders a helping hand.
With loud applause, you reached the beach.

Jaap Geuze, it's an honor for me
to be able to name your name.
You are a HERO and HEROES can we boast!

The highest award is you, very deservedly because of our
given a “citizen mother”, but the best part is,
that those five young children can go on living
