Introduction

Beginning the Ministry
Since it was the first class, we started with a brief introduction to the topic and tried to draw connections of this knowledge to our lives. We’ve focused on the concept of the faith community nursing (FCN). Students learned that FCN involved a specialized practice of incorporating faith in nursing as a part of the holistic healthcare. Under this theory, a registered professional nurse should care for not only the body but also the spirit. This aim can be achieved during group and individual sessions.
The competency of the week was the successful administration of FCN, which required some advanced preparation. We learned that the commitment of the nurse was of primary importance; thus, he or she had to start with praying alone, with the patient, with the family, or friends in order to receive the divine guidance. Then, one had to talk to family members. At this stage, the CURE method could be used. The method entailed contacting key people, understanding requests and desires of the FCN community, gathering resources, building relations, and finally evaluating the ministry.
Students learned that it was vital to contact key people in the health and wellness group since they had a huge role in supporting and guiding the community. It could be done by choosing individuals with special interest in health from different groups that were willing to cooperate. These informal leaders should be able to influence people on the secular level. Understanding the needs of the FCN was of primary importance; thus, we learned that it was crucial to assess the situation, develop programs, and communicate with the faith community. Building relations presupposed gathering resources and finances for supporting both the people and the initiatives. Finally, we learned why it was vital to evaluate the ministry and how to do it. We considered programs that could be helpful or that could inspire other people. The success of such approach is only possible if there is some advance preparation to establishing the ministry, if there are competent and willing individuals to run it, and if the final evaluation of the ministry is made.
Communicate and Collaboration
For this class, I learned the academic keywords: communication, which means a transmission of a message from a sender to receiver with the view to influencing the latter’s behavior, and the presence. We learned about therapeutic communication (TC) that involved interaction between a nurse and a client. TC is well-focused and goal-directed. A number of considerations ought to be considered in TC: ethics, religiosity, and legality.
Concerning the presence, we learned about the importance of maintaining boundaries, being a careful listener, using eye contact, and sharing. We next focused on the barriers to effective communication, including personal insecurity, physical discomfort, odd speech patterns, or being preoccupied. Students got to know about different types of TC, including supportive listening, active listening, and nonverbal communication. We also learned about different tools of active listening, including repetition, summarizing, and reflection. We got to know that the ministerial team could exist in many forms. Nevertheless, the FCN team members should have a shared vision, sense of humor, respect, and trust, as well as care for each other and have complementary personalities. It can help the group to communicate freely, set rules effectively, establish roles, and introduce certain rituals.
Next, we learned about the staff structures: collaborative, hierarchical, and independent, and reflected on their pros and cons if being used for the ministerial staff of FCN. We also studied the concept of collaboration, under which two or more people worked collectively for a common goal, and the importance of it in the FCN community. When people disagree, a conflict arises; it should be addressed as soon as possible First, it is crucial to understand the conflict and then respond to it with the either compromise or avoidance. The competency was the conflict resolution, which required the determination of the root cause of any confrontation. Should I face such a situation, I will try to understand the context of the conflict, will strive to be open-minded and solve it creatively with the help of negotiations and mediation. In addition, individuals working in a group should consider personal preferences and their personality types through the DISC behavioral instrument when working in a ministerial group.
Conclusion
The paper has briefly outlined how to start a health ministry and explained the importance of caring for not only the body but also the spirit. The second topic focused on the effective communication, in particular, how to build an effective therapeutic communication with tangible group results.
