October 4, Animal Day: Don't Eat Animal Day
From 6 October, the impressive documentary Cow will be playing in various Dutch cinemas and film houses. In this documentary, director Andrea Arnold follows the daily life of a cash cow in the livestock industry. It gives a very nice portrait of an animal that is trapped in the system. She has only just given birth, the Luma cow. The amniotic sac is still dangling empty between her legs. But hey, there she goes into the milking machine again. Meanwhile, the farmer gives her young calf, out of her sight, milk a bottle.
It shows the life of the cash cow, which is a series of insemination, giving birth, being milked, etc. The camera sits so close to the cowhide that Luma occasionally walks the cameraman upside down.
The result is intensely moving. It underlines that what is being chased through a blunting routine here as an object is a living being. A creature that lovingly licks her newborn calves clean. That is loved by a bull. That you can enjoy the sunset in a meadow. And that you look at the camera and make contact. Her eyes are unforgettable.
