#educacin There are still very few, only 11%, graduates from middle and higher education courses who decide to start their own business and manage to maintain salaried staff after five years of completing their studies. This is stated in the report The FP in the Spanish entrepreneurial ecosystem, prepared by the Vocational Training Observatory of CaixaBank Dualiza in collaboration with Orkestra Basque Institute of Competitiveness.
The study points out that it is important to develop skills for innovation and entrepreneurship among VET students, since they will be useful both for self-employment and for someone else. In addition, students will be able to face the challenges imposed by energy, demographic and environmental transitions.
The percentage of the employed population between 20 and 34 years of age who are self-employed has declined at all levels of education in the last four years. In the case of VET, it stands at 79%, meaning self-employment “that which encompasses aid in the family business, entrepreneurs with and without employees or cooperativism”, notes the report.
What measures exist to try to increase the numbers of entrepreneurship among future VET graduates and foster an entrepreneurial culture? Which professional families are among those who are most successful in entrepreneurship? Below, you will learn about the key points of the above-mentioned report and what are its main conclusions.
Promote Entrepreneurship Classrooms in Vocational Training
Encouraging entrepreneurship among young people is essential in promoting a new economic model. But for this to be possible, it is necessary to “generate mechanisms to support both the creation of companies with employees, and their survival”, the report points out. In this regard, the European Commission's Entrepreneurship Action Plan 2020 stresses the importance of training professionals in entrepreneurial skills “in order to promote growth and the creation of businesses”.
Similarly, the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan for the Spanish economy (Spain Puede) proposes five strategic actions, including the creation of Entrepreneurship Classrooms in Vocational Training, to boost the recovery of economic growth in Spain.
