The Fever of Being Positive and Mental Health
Nowadays everyone is an expert on mental health and constantly recommends to focus on the positive and suggests ways of achieving that. Some people even suggest procedures to overcome depression and anxiety. Entire businesses emerge around that, delivering clichés as epiphanies and discoveries from geniuses.
Don't get me wrong. I am all for uplifting thinking, as long as it does not become denial and obscurantism. The consequences can be lethal.
Mental diseases are physical diseases. They are diseases from a very specific organ: the brain. Telling a person with diagnosis of depression or generalized anxiety disorder to think positive is like telling a paraplegic to run the marathon or a blindman to describe photographs. Like the legs or the eyes, the area of the brain responsible for having a good mood is damaged and no words or behaviors alone can change that.
When you have a disease, you go to the doctor or to several of them. The doctors for mental disease are the psychiatrist, to prescribe the right chemicals to fix the brain, and the psychologist or psychotherapist for teaching the mind to process emotions. The intervention of one or both this doctors is determined by how severe the damage in the brain is.
The mambo jumbo of the so-called experts on mental health are not for people with mental diseases and do not prevent people from becoming ill. They're only entertainment in disguise. You may feel better with them, but you should never take them seriously.
