The statue #orca in the port of Urk refers to the naming of the former island.
Urk is a former island and a current municipality in the province of Flevoland in the Netherlands. Urk is the smallest municipality in the province, with 20,776 inhabitants (1 January 2019, source: CBS) on an area of approximately 11,54 km² (and 98.36 km² of water). Until the completion in 1939 of the dike that connected Urk with Lemmer, Urk was an island in the IJsselmeer, the former Zuiderzee (until the finish of the Afsluitdijk in 1932). In 1942 the Noordoostpolder was dry ground, but for the inhabitants of Urk the island feeling is still alive.
