Petropictus: art on stones

This technique has its origin in 1985, when the artist Gustavo Cabral, alias Ciruelo, began this specific technique, although prehistoric humans were already painting on stone walls.
The peculiarity of petropicts is that they are, between painting and sculpture: the image is created taking advantage of the natural forms of stones, which gives volume to the creation. The tool used by Ciruelo is the airbrush, whose fuzzy effect is ideal for creating realistic shadows. Ciruelo explains: “To paint a stone, I look at it until I find shapes that adapt to it and then I work to make sense of its cracks and textures, in order to achieve a realistic sculpture through painting. And I do it without modifying or carving the stone at all. In this process, I maintain a very magical dialogue with the element”.
