The plañideras are women who were paid money for going to cry at the funeral of a person they didn't know

These weepers were hired because it was believed that the crying they emited cleansed the soul of the deceased from sins thus facilitating their quick reach to eternal glory. Once the burial was over, the plañideras or weeping asked to pay their fees for having done their work. This pay could be in money or food .

Its function is to cry for the soul of the dead were middle-aged, some were widows or people who, for various reasons, had been left alone. The weeping women attended the wake completely in black, used to hire two or three and were placed in a specially reserved place for them to undertake their dramatic sob until the time of the burial.

This was a highly popular hiring since it was not the exclusive membership of a particular social group but that any member of the company contracted its services to act.
