La Muñeca square or Plaza La Libertad, is a public space in the residential area of Santa Lucia, in the historic center of Maracaibo, Zulia state. Built in 1910, it is presided over by an obelisk that finishes off in a sculpture that resembles the statue of Liberty in New York.
It was built in 1910 and was inaugurated as La Libertad Square, but the gentle passion fruit of the Santa Lucia area, or El Empedrado, recognizes it as Plaza de la Muñeca due to the sculpture perched in its obelisk reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty of New York.
It is one of the most emblematic squares of the Zulian capital, along with the plazas Mayor, today Bolivar dating from 1574; La Urdaneta, built on the grounds of “El Circo” in 1888; San Juan de Dios, in front of the Basilica de la Chiquinquirá; José Enrique Rodó; the Good Maestro; La Páez (1943), in La República (1945) and those of La República (1945) and those of the Buen Maestro Alonso de Ojeda and by the Indian Mara (1949).
The square had its peak when the extinct Imperio cinema was operating in front of it, but today it is a space barely visited by local passers-by and parishioners.
