Popcorn Music Style
History Popcorn Music Style
In the 1960s, the music style Popcorn was born. It originated in Belgium. In 1969, this style of music was named after a discotheque called The Popcorn in Vrasene ( Belgium ). The music style Popcorn is derived from a song Popcorn sung by James Brown also in the sixties. In several discotheques DJs played the song Popcorn as well as the song Mother Popcorn which was also released in 1969 by James Brown. Popcorn music style is slightly different from other music styles from the sixties, such as rock'n roll, disco music, twist. Popcorn is more a mix of different music styles, such as rock, ska, rhythm & blues, soul, latin, cha cha and doowop. Gerry and Firmin are two DJs from Vrasene who set up the popcorn music style there in the years 1969 and 1970. They played different kinds of popcorn music that was not yet available in the shops. These were often records that came from London or other parts of England. A few years later, another popcorn music style emerged, called Latin Popcorn. This was popcorn music with a mambo and oldskool style. In America you also had a lot of this kind of music which often didn't make the charts, but was played in the clubs.
