The next pandemic is hatched in colossal chicken stables. Most human flu viruses once started as a bird flu virus. If a virus multiplies, a new variant may develop. In modern chicken stables there are up to more than one hundred thousand chickens together. If a bird flu virus goes around there, mutation gives you new variants. And variation is the raw material for natural selection. For a virus in that mountain of chickens, that means: it can adapt until a variant arises in which a sick chicken ignites very quickly and a lot of others. And in the end: which can also be transmitted to humans. The misery that comes with it is well known.

Professor of virology and bird flu expert Thijs Kuiken (not a family of) argues for a more animal-friendly reform of our current poultry farming, because:

POULTRY FARMING IS A CACKLING TIME BOMB

The avian flu that now prevails in the Netherlands is not dangerous for humans. But it is waiting for a new variant that does cause a human deadly pandemic, scientists say. And it is crystal clear where new deadly varieties can come from: the European poultry industry.
