A bird-friendly garden provides a haven for our feathered friends, a place where they can rest, eat and breed. Whether you're an experienced gardener or a beginner, creating a bird-friendly garden is a rewarding experience that supports biodiversity in your area.

Choose the right plants

Plants are the basis of every bird-friendly garden. They provide food, shelter and nesting opportunities. If you are going to buy plants yourself, only buy plants that bear the SKAL logo or bio logo, as these are the only safe plants without toxic pesticides and chemicals.

  • Native plants : Choose native plants because they are better adapted to local soil and climate conditions and often provide the best food sources for birds.
  • Berry bushes and fruit trees : Shrubs such as holly, mountain ash and elderberry and trees such as apple and cherry provide birds with an abundance of food.
  • Flowering plants : Plants such as sunflowers, lavender and Echinacea attract insects, which in turn are food for birds.
  • Grasses and seed-bearing plants : Plants such as ornamental grasses and wild flowers produce seeds that attract many bird species.
