How to ensure that the plastic or wooden water barrel does not freeze in the coming frost period?
Take a pET bottle fill them for about 1/3rd with sand or pebbles. Without a cap, place it vertically in the barrel so that the sand drops below the surface of the water by more than 5cm.

If the water expands by freezing, the bottle will be squashed and thus the pressure will be removed from the barrel wall.

You can also empty the barrel whenever frost is expected. But that's cumbersome, and where are you with all that water when it freezes?
