How H&M gets rid of its clothing mountain
Clothing Clothing at fashion-conscious retail chains such as H&M has a high turnover rate. But that makes H&M stay in place with millions of garments. Where are those? In 2015, more than 21 million garments remained unsold throughout the Dutch clothing industry, about 65 percent of the total. Converted to H&M's knitted sweaters, buddy M, that's enough to cover more than nine hundred football fields. Another 107 million garments were only sold after being discounted. What happened to those unsold clothes? A large part, about two-thirds, went to charity. Those pants, shirts and sweaters ended up in Africa or Asia, Conclusr experienced. In addition, a fair share remained in the store, an outlet or the storage. Around 600,000 clothes were recycled into wipes, felt or insulation material.

Burned or recycled

What remains are the nearly 600,000 clothes that, before they were ever worn, were destroyed. A remarkable fact, at a time when consumers are encouraged to live more sustainably. For example, just to grow the cotton needed for a white t-shirt, 2,700 liters of water are needed. That is equivalent to the amount of drinking water that an average person uses in two and a half years and is as much as it takes for a pound of pork.
