A Prusik is a friction hitch or knot used in climbing, canyoneering, mountaineering, caving, rope rescue, ziplining, and arborists to tie a loop of cord around a rope. Prusik is a word that refers to both the cord loops used to secure the hitch and the hitch itself, as well as the verb "to prusik" (using a Prusik to ascend). In a more informal sense, any friction hitch or device that can grip a rope is referred to as a friction hitch (see autoblock). The term is frequently spelt as "Prussik," "Prussik," or "Prussic" due to its sound.
The Prusik hitch is named after the Austrian mountaineer Karl Prusik, who is said to have invented it. Rope climbing was first demonstrated in a 1931 Austrian mountaineering guidebook. It was employed to ascend the last summit on various mountaineering routes, where a rope could be thrown over the top and secured, allowing climbers to reach the summit by praising up the opposite side of the rope. A cord Prusik causes little or no harm to the rope attached. Still, some mechanical ascenders (not Prusiks) can cause damage with regular usage, mainly if the gear slides during climbing or is excessively loaded or shock loaded.
