Pumpkin carving is actually not suitable for small children

Last Tuesday afternoon, we were at the Intratuin in our city. We wanted to have some more for the Christmas decorations we already had, and at the same time, we also wanted to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere. Our city showed that each Intratuin is decorated differently with the Christmas theme. It was really beautiful in Duiven, nicer than at the Intratuin in our city, but they also have the space to really make something of it. However, the Intratuin in our city is also very beautiful and we enjoyed the atmosphere. We have spent too much again, but the lighthouse they sell looks a bit like the Urk lighthouse and we had to have it, we could not leave it alone and the price is not too bad, there are more expensive houses.
But hey, that's not the point. At one point, we walked by the children's corner and saw that a fun afternoon for children had been organized by the employees of Intratuin, pumpkin carving. In itself, it is a nice idea and a lot of children like such a carved pumpkin very much. Still, seeing a mother so busy, I realized that it's actually dangerous for children. I had often seen on TV cooking shows that chefs have trouble carving pumpkins, that the skin is thicker and firmer than you might expect. I saw that that mother, and also an employee who supervised the event, had a lot of trouble with it. It is also possible that the knives were not sharp enough. In any case, I saw the mother or mother-in-law of the mother, who sat close to her, regularly dive to the side so that she did not get the knife that her daughter or daughter-in-law held in her. For the thriller writers, however, it would have been a nice story to write about. Murder in the Intratuin where a daughter-in-law killed her mother-in-law with a knife she was also using to write a pumpkin. Maybe I'm just giving them ideas.
Anyway, I was just watching that and also told that mother and employee that it looks dangerous, that they clearly had a problem with it. They could only agree with me. I wondered if, if I had had a child, they would have given permission to participate and had to honestly confess that I would disappoint the child, because I would not have allowed them to participate and my husband would not have given permission to do so either. It's too dangerous. What if the knife accidentally gets into his or her body or into someone else's body because the knife shoots out? I don't have to think about it.
I understand that there will be people who say that I should not exaggerate, that I should not be too cautious or that I have no right to speak because we do not have children, but it is how I experienced and saw it. I saw that adults were already having trouble carving at the pumpkin, let alone how difficult it must be for children.

Ja ik denk ook dat pompoensnijden moeilijk en gevaarlijk is voor een kind. Het vergt wel wat kracht om ze uit te hollen en daardoor heb je ook niet altijd controle op het mes dat je gebruikt. Zelfs bij soep maken heb ik al wel eens uitgeschoven en in.mn... Show more

Ik ben het met je eens. Laat het uithollen eventueel over aan kinderen, maar doe het snijden zelf. Want het gaat goed, tot het mis gaat. Het mes kan ook overigens ook uitschieten bij volwassenen. Het is altijd verstandig om voorzichtig te zijn.
