#REGENBOOG 😍 A rainbow is a colored arc that can be perceived in the sky as the (low) sun against a mist of #waterdruppeltjes and the sun is behind the observer. It's a #optisch #effect that is caused by the refraction and #weerspiegeling of light in the water droplets.
A rainbow derives its name from its appearance in rain, but also in a cloud of droplets of water from a waterfall, garden hose or fountain and sometimes above the surf in the sea one can see a rainbow. From an airplane or from a mountaintop, a rainbow can be visible as a circle (see Circular Rainbow below), when no horizon is in the way. The light is reflected and broken into a spectrum of the primary colors, which blend into each other.
The center of the arc, seen from the observer, is diametrically opposed to the sun, and thus, by definition, is below the horizon. Observer and arc together form an imaginary cone with the observer at the tip of the cone and the rainbow along the arc edge of the ground plane of the cone. The arc has a half-top angle of about 42 degrees inside the cone; the width of the color band from red to violet is approximately 2 degrees.
Due to multiple reflections of the light in the water droplets, outside the first rainbow sometimes a brighter bee rainbow can be seen with the colors in reverse order.
