Equally charming, empowering and epic, this Southeast Asia-inspired adventure features Disney's next great warrior princess who will join characters like Moana, Merida and Mulan. Full prologue establishes the world of Kumandra and the battle between dragons, humans and Druun. Raya and Sisu receive a lot of help in their mission from the various locals that incorporate into their circle: young Boun (Izaac Wang), the chef /ship captain of Tail; baby Noi (Thalia Tran), a little talonese pickpocket whose monkey squad will delight the youngest spectators; and Tong (Benedict Wong), an intimidating but kind warrior from Spine. They come together to protect Sisu (who can become a woman who looks more like Awkwafina) and find a way to defeat Druun.

The film's bursts of danger and moments of pain are balanced very lightly (little Noi is funny and Sisu, like the comedian who plays her, is irresistibly charming) and the heart. Humor is present in Raya and the last dragon., and Tuk Tuk is an adorable animal companion. There is no romance in the film, which focuses instead on the “family found” that Raya and Sisu create with their new friends. Directors Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, along with screenwriters Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim, manage to make the characters' orphanage a moving statement about loss: it surrounds all characters and drives Raya to do everything possible to free her father from her stone cage. While this is not a musical, James Newton Howard's evocative score is fantastic, and the animation is so detailed and stellar that families can stop and back just to enjoy the diversity of landscapes, costumes and characters. Once again, Disney has managed to take the familiar and make it happen.
