What is red clover?
Red clover is a native plant with round, pink to red flowers. Actually, each flower head consists of up to 30 to 60 separate tubular flowers. Red clover can root up to two meters deep and is a hardy species, which means that it can survive the winter without damage.
Where does the scientific name Trifolium pratense come from?
The red clover has leaves with a typical white 'V' that consists of three parts. That's why the Latin name is Trifolium. 'Tri' means three and 'folium' is leaf. In many religions, the number three symbolises the body, mind and soul. It is said that red clover has a harmonizing effect on this. And sometimes, if you're lucky, you'll find a leaf that consists of four parts. A four-leaf clover!
