Reflections on Black Athletes and Jim Crow
In the era of Jim Crow and the Black Codes, African American athletes experienced hard times as they could not compete with the whites. African American athletes were treated as outcasts. Such attitude was inhuman and unfair and was one of the violations of African Americansβ rights. In fact, one could think that African Americans had contiguous diseases that could infect the whites. The segregation made the athletes be forgotten in history. If only African Americans were allowed to play with the whites, the history of sport would be different. African American athletes had wonderful skills that could have propelled athletics forward. What is worse, African American athletics heroes were not even recognized in history. Consequently, this makes the whites carry a stole legacy in the era of Jim Crow and Black Codes. In fact, African American athletes had much better athletic feats comparing to the whites. Unfortunately, the racial segregation and the Black Codes could not allow African American athletes to have their legacy.
The Secret Game was played secretly. The rules of the game were not released to the public, because it was illegal to isolate African American athletes. Despite the fact that the law was unwritten, it was clear that African American athletes were not acceptable. If only they were allowed to play publicly with the whites, racism could have ended a long time ago. During the era of Jim Crow, the Black Codes encouraged colleges and universities to put African Americans separately. As a result, this made the whites view them as different. Children grew up with perspectives that African Americans were not equal to them. In fact, this is why African Americans are still fighting for equality, even in the twenty first century.
The Game of Change altered the perceptions of many Americans. When African Americans played with the whites publicly and won, the whites started viewing them in another perspective. In the era of Jim Crow and the Black Codes, African Americans were still treated as unequal. The black athletes were not given a chance to play with the whites. The whites thought that they were superior to the blacks. However, the Game of Change made people think otherwise.
It should be mentioned that during the era of Jim Crow, the Black Codes were the main hindrances to equality. The laws hindered students and young people from socializing and playing together. African Americans have the same capacity with the whites and should be given equal opportunities. As revealed by the Game of Change, playing together brings social cohesion and eliminates many barriers of social economic equality. The codes denied African Americans a chance to represent their race in athletics. The era of Jim Crow and the Black Codes portrayed African Americans as weak and incomparable with the whites. However, this was proved otherwise by the Game of Change. The Secret Game that had been played secretly for many decades was revealed. Surprisingly, African Americans proved to be much stronger athletes than the whites.
In summary, the Black Codes were the greatest hindrance to equality. The codes denied African American athletes a chance to carry their flag in history. In fact, there is no single African American athlete from the era of Jim Crow who is recognized in history. The Black Codes oppressed African Americans and made them remain segregated at the expense of the whites.
