IJskristallen breken het licht
De zenitboog kun je zien als het zonlicht door ijskristallen in dunne cirruswolken hoog in de dampkring wordt gebroken. Bij deze breking gaat het licht van het ene medium in het andere over, bijvoorbeeld van lucht naar ijs. Omdat de snelheid van het licht verschillend is in de twee media, veranderen de lichtstralen van richting.
De brekingsgraad is echter afhankelijk van de golflengte van het licht. De lange golflengten in het rode deel van het zichtbare spectrum buigen het minst af, en de korte in het violette deel het meest.
Wit licht wordt gesplitst
Zo wordt het witte zonlicht in al zijn kleuren gesplitst. De kleurschifting zorgt voor het regenboogeffect in de zenitboog – en ook voor het effect in de regenboog zelf, waarbij het licht in waterdruppels breekt.
