Review: Floortje Nachtegaal by Marc Terror

When you see the beautiful cover of Floortje Nachtegaal by Marc Terreur, you get the feeling that you are about to read a fairy tale where time plays an important role. The title is reminiscent of a famous British nurse with that name in English. You wonder if the author deliberately did that or not. The subtitle makes you curious about the story. You immediately check your clocks and wonder if there are secretly any tiny people hidden in the clocks. Ienieminie people living their own lives between the wheels and gears of the clocks. Evelien van Landeghem's illustrations complete the book.
Floortje Nachtegaal by Marc Terreur is about Floortje Nachtegaal, who has a mother who is mentally ill. Something she can't do about. Before Floortje was born, her father thought her mother would change once she had a child. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case. The mother puts Floortje in the big bell when she starts to cry and goes out for rest herself. This way, she stays in control of the lightning. Until a fatal summer storm and a nightingale change everything forever.
