Review For the music out by Bart Nooteboom

When you see the beautiful cover of For the music from Bart Nooteboom, you want to know who the girl on the cover is, what her story is and what kind of music she is playing on her wind instrument. The title makes you curious, you want to know if you should take the title literally or figuratively. You won't get an answer to that until the end and then you'll understand its meaning.
Before Bart Nooteboom's music is about a family and a family friend. They have conversations with each other about life, art and society. They philosophize about it briefly but firmly.
In For the music out, as you would expect from him in his previous books, Bart Nooteboom has a good understanding of the characters. James even reminds a bit of the author, and who knows, maybe this book is partly autobiographical. The author is not only well acquainted with the characters, but also with the environments where the story takes place, and he was able to empathize well with the time frame. The author's descriptions give you the feeling that you're experiencing the story yourself, that you're on the sidelines.
