Review: The Coloured Bastard by Tirza Drisi

When you see the beautiful cover of The Coloured Bastard by Tirza Drisi, you want to know who the child in the swing is and what her story is. As awful as the title sounds, you're immediately curious about the story. The subtitle clearly shows what to expect. The photos complete the book, but it is a pity that there are no more photos in it, such as how the author looked as a bride. You understand that the author did not share photos with or of her children, her ex, and other people for private reasons.
In The Coloured Bastard, Tirza Drisi tells her life story. She explains what it's like to grow up as a brown-skinned girl in the Netherlands in the fifties, sixties and seventies. What it's like to grow up with a big secret and a sense of shame. She and her family eventually remigrated to Suriname in the late 1970s, where she experienced a coup in 1980 and lives under a dictatorship. At the end of the eighties, she and her children remigrated back to the Netherlands, where she was put in a “box”. She talks about what she has experienced in her life and also talks about her family history. She has intertwined her life story with the history of Suriname and the Netherlands.
