When you see Adriaan van Dis's beautiful cover of Naar softness and a warm hug, you don't immediately get an idea of what kind of story you're going to read. They also did well to choose this cover. The title makes you curious about the story. You get an idea that it's a loving story that you're about to read.
In Towards softness and a warm embrace by Adriaan van Dis, the author takes the reader to his childhood, to the summer months when he was nine springs. He takes you back to when he stayed with his grandfather and his maid. The girl, named Ommie by the author, takes the young Adriaan under her wing. At that time, Ommie increasingly opposed Adriaan's grandfather, who is strict and has nothing to do with modernity. The young Adriaan is an anxious boy who has already experienced a lot. Ommie and Adriaan become close during those summer months, in which both yearn for love and recognition. Ommie also appears to be a peacemaker in the battered family. In between, the adult Adriaan speaks and then looks back on his childhood with mature eyes.
