Maarten van der Graaff's asphalt takes place in two different years. In 1999, where all roads in the Netherlands magically disappeared in the summer. What's left behind is still hard to imagine, but then shadowy figures who call themselves angels appear. Several people are crossing this new world looking for answers, and some are also looking for a missing person. The question is whether they will receive answers to their questions and whether the missing persons will be found and what happened to them when all roads in the Netherlands promptly disappeared.
Then there is also a story in the future, in 2068. The Netherlands looks completely different and people live largely differently. Ira lives in Dierenriem, a neighborhood in the Outer Randstad. She always has the feeling that the life she and the people in the Netherlands are living is not quite right.
