In ancient herbal books, authors almost attribute mythical powers to rosemary, as with so many
traditional plants. The plant protected against evil spirits and was given to the dead at the
funeral. But rosemary could also keep man young and fertile, so at weddings rosemary certainly took an important place. There are many humorous stories, for example that rosemary grows best in a household vegetable garden where the woman is in charge! And what about the next tip “if you feel weak, boil the leaves in clean water, wash yourself and you will look radiant, smell them often and it will keep you young”(Herbal Book of Blanckes, 1525).
Gerard wrote about rosemary “that the herb comforts and makes the heart happy”. Traditionally, the above-ground parts of plants have been used as a tonic in case of exhaustion, weakness, depression and fatigue. Also in the treatment of circulatory problems, rheumatic complaints and headaches it is a time-tested folk medicine.
At least as popular is the application of rosemary oil, which has a stimulating effect on the entire system. Often, rosemary oil is added to body care products, such as bath products, massage oil, foot baths and soap. One even prepares hair tonics with rosemary because rosemary would stimulate hair growth and restore color. #rozemarijn #rosmarinus
