External Features

Sea turtles have a streamlined, heart-shaped shell that protects them from predators. The shield, also known as carapax, varies in color and size depending on the species. They have large, paddle-like front legs that are specially adapted to move efficiently through the water. Their heads are relatively small in relation to their bodies, and they cannot withdraw their heads into their shells, like many turtles can.
