People think sharks are aggressive, dangerous animals. Sharks find people aggressive, dangerous animals.

I agree with the sharks.

Sharks have been living on our planet for 450 million years. But due to continuous overfishing, their numbers are falling rapidly. Recently, Brazilian authorities seized the fins of 10,000 beautiful animals -- several species of which are at risk of extinction.

In Brazil, 10,000 sharks were maimed and killed for selling their fins by commercial fishing companies. Despite the crucial role that sharks play in protecting marine ecosystems, Brazil continues to allow the fin trade. But now we can do something about it: members of the Brazilian Congress want to hold hearings soon on a total ban on fin trading. Let's create a loud call and convince Congress to finally ban this bloody trade!

A worrying backdoor in Brazilian law can make companies rich selling cut shark fins. Fishing boats that are looking for extortionate profits therefore “accidentally” catch as many sharks as possible. The only way to end shark slaughter is a total ban on the fin trade. And that is possible!

The United States introduced such a ban last year, just like the United Kingdom this year. The European Commission is currently looking into whether the EU can do the same -- now Brazil must take the step too. Brazilian legislators want to hold a hearing in the coming weeks. But for Congress to act, we need to launch a deafening international appeal. Sign now and we'll get our votes delivered directly to Brazilian legislators: Brazil: ban the bloody fin trade now! Cutting fins is incredibly cruel, but that's not the only problem. Sharks are essential to ocean ecosystems. When there are too few sharks, coral reefs die, seagrass languishes and biodiversity declines. Yet, more than 70 million sharks are killed for their fins every year. Due to continued overfishing, a third of the shark species are now on the list of endangered species. Recently, authorities seized a large load of fins of an estimated 10,000 sharks. Among the victims were several beautiful shark species, such as the short-fin mackerel shark, that was literally categorized as an endangered species one month ago. Let's make this moment a tipping point and call on Brazil to close all legal loopholes, ban the trade in shark fins and end these terrible practices once and for all. Sign the petition now and share it with everyone you know: Brazil: ban the bloody fin trade now!
