One of the hardest things about learning in sheet music for the piano, unlike most other instruments, is that not just a single melody is played. Piano music requires you to play more than one game at a time. Most often, these parts are interconnected. They are part of a chord you need to read accurately.

Sheet music piano beginners

Sheet music is read left to right. The reasoning behind this is that music began as an exercise most focused on the progression of notes in a scale or mode in a horizontal manner. When more than one voice sounded together, they usually sang unanimously and it wasn't until the 9th century that musicians were increasingly engaged in vertical harmony and polyphony. Keyboard instruments, such as the organ, harpsichord and ultimately the piano, were instruments designed to meet this changing aesthetic and the increased importance of vertical harmonies. They were adapted into a notation that was developed to address horizontal issues in the first place. This is not to say that sheet music cannot be read in front of the piano, but that the novice student of piano should learn how to think differently about the music on the page than he can read words on a page.
