#history Called the Liberator; Caracas, Venezuela, 1783 - Santa Marta, Colombia, 1830) Caudillo of Hispano-American Independence. Born into a family of Basque origin from the Venezuelan Creole hydalguía, Simon Bolívar forged his political ideology by reading the thinkers of empiricism and enlightenment (Locke, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Rousseau) and traveling around Europe. In Paris he contacted the ideas of the French Revolution and met Napoleon and German naturalist Humboldt personally. Affiliated with Freemasonry and imbued with liberal ideas, as early as 1805 he swore in Rome that he would not rest until he liberated his country from Spanish domination. And although he lacked military training, Simon Bolívar became the main leader of the war for the independence of the Spanish-American colonies; in addition, he provided the movement with an ideological basis through his own writings and speeches.
