Paul Simon (born October 13, 1941) and Art Garfunkel (born November 5, 1941) grew up from primary school and first became friends in the sixth grade. Together they became one of the best folk-pop duos of all time. Their music helped define pop radio in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Simon and Garfunkel were born one month apart and grew up in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens (New York).
Simon and Garfunkel
They lived just a few blocks away from each other and went out of school together, from elementary to secondary education. Their friendship began in sixth grade when they both starred in the school production of “Alice in Wonderland”. After they became friends, Simon and Garfunkel formed the doo-wop group the Peptones with three other classmates. As part of the vocal team, they learned how to harmonize together in the vocal field. In high school, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel started acting together as a duo. One day they drove to Manhattan to record their song “Hey Schoolgirl” for $25. Promoter Sid Person heard them and signed them with a contract with his label Big Records after speaking to their parents.Â
