Why meat processors are so vulnerable to the virus is not yet clear. In the United States and Germany, slaughterhouses had to close their doors after a large number of infections had taken place.

In both countries, working and living conditions proved to be dramatic and staff in the workplace could barely keep a distance. Germany therefore adopted a law last Wednesday banning temporary work for meat processors from 1 January 2021 and improving working conditions for migrant workers.
