The basic income solves a number of persistent social problems, says De Roo. “A basic income gives everyone a security of existence, you can give your own life direction. It also stops shitty jobs and pointless work — that's done by robots, or it has to pay better — and it keeps people from getting stuck between assistance and minimum wage. If beneficiaries start earning something now, they tend to deteriorate net. With a basic income, you'll always earn more when you go to work.”
Thoughts about basic income are not new. During the last major economic crisis, in the early 1980s, basic income seemed to be the best solution that never came. When the economy picked up, basic income quickly disappeared into the background. The difference between then and then is the huge increase in flexwork, which now brings the basic income back to the attention. In the Netherlands, 5 million people have a permanent contract, 2 million a flex contract, 1 million work as self-employed persons and 2 million people have benefits. “The current social security system is no longer effective. The economy is growing, the number of flex contracts is growing, and wages are not rising. A lot of people are stuck in poorly paid jobs. Or are heavily underpaid as self-employed.” A basic income gives them financial air and freedom of choice.
Is De Roo going to experience that the basic income is being introduced somewhere? “I think so. For example, in Finland. There is a lot of support for the introduction of a basic income. There are experiments in Switzerland, Canada, Kenya, Uganda, India, the USA. In the Netherlands, a number of cities are going to experiment with it. Here, about half of the population is in favour of a basic income. That percentage is growing.”
