Ernst Daniel Smid grew up in a Dutch Reformed family in Enschede but later began to doubt and, according to his own words, still struggles with faith. Much of the classical music he sang had a Christian content. Bach, for example, Blacksmith: “God has been lucky with Bach. No composition contributes to thinking about faith as the Matthew Passion.” Later he preferred to sing opera, had enough of baroque and wanted to sing repertoire with more feeling. Meanwhile he sings a lot of different music. Fascinated by faith and how it affects our lives, he has made programs for the EO about religion in the Netherlands. Jeroen Zijlstra comes from a strictly secular family from the West-Frisian Opsterland. His grandparents were humanists and communists. His father was head of public school in the village. While many young people stormed out of the church, Zijlstra walked into the church next to his house where an ecumenical centre had come. He sang there in a choir with believing and non-believing people and wrote texts at the request of the organist. At home, he got little hold on to. At the neighbors, in the church, he thought it was. And it stayed that way. He became a fisherman and musician and as a husband of a minister, the non-believer Zijlstra is never far from the church. Jeroen is also a composer and lyricist and won the Annie MG Schmidt Prize in 2007. Religion and the church regularly visit in his songs.
