Madeira is a very fertile island.
You can sow, plant and harvest there all year round.
What we can only do in spring and summer is possible there all year round.

Bananas are grown in the gardens, but you also have large banana plantations there.


However, the bananas may not be exported, for example to the mainland.
This is what the larger plantations outside Europe, such as the producer of Chiquita, are behind.
Only category 1 bananas can be imported into Europe.
This has nothing to do with the quality, but it has to do with the size.
So in Madeira, but also in the Canary Islands, the bananas stay on the island.
