Stereo headphones

It all goes back to the creation of the telephone, sound is transported in the form of electrical impulses because the transducers transmit sound by moving the receiver, but its frequency response was very low, so only words were intelligible.

In the 1950s, mobile iron headphones were used on the radio that worked on the same principle as the telephone headphones, these were very large and uncomfortable.


In Berlin, in 1924, the factory of Engineer Eugen Beyer, today known as Beyerdynamic, was founded, which developed and produced speakers for cinema.

By 1937, the company begins mass production of its first DT dynamic hearing aids.

Initially, music could only be heard through phonographs, until 1958, when John Koss and engineer Martin Lange Jr. devised a system to make phonographs portable and that in turn users could perceive stereo sound.

The main idea was to market the portable phonograph, but consumers were more interested in hearing aids than the portable phonograph.

This is how the first stereo hearing aids emerged, which expanded the hearing aid industry in all aspects.

The first version of the Koss headphones, the SP/3, were specifically for listening to music, compatible with stereo sound and worked together with a suitcase-shaped phonograph.

Koss hearing aids were the first to have a full spectrum of low and high notes.


Seeing the success of his invention, Koss dedicated himself to improving his hearing aids and manufacturing and marketing it from the basement of his house. The SP/3 worked with a simple speaker built in paper.

Their next model was the Pro/4, which incorporated a transducer microphone that offered better quality and were launched on the market in 1962, managing to set a new standard since their design presented an advance of one inch of coil that made them practically indestructible.

This model has been introduced again by popular demand, and remains in line today.
