In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, pesticides and agri-food lobbies work twice as hard to protect their profits. This is evidenced by lobby-letters recently seen by the foodwatch teams. The mighty #pesticidenproducenten indirectly endanger your health and my health.

Cunning lobby in times of crisis
Last month we saw letters from Bayer-Monsanto and Copa-Cogeca (the European umbrella organisation for farmers, gardeners and cooperatives) to European political decision-makers asking 'to have their hands free'. Basically, the lobbyists say in their letters: “It's complicated enough to continue feeding the population during the coronacrisis,do not hinder us now with measures to better protect human health and the environment”.The lobbying letters simply call for the freezing of any idea of stricter rules, especially in the field of pesticides. They are asking for more time, a tactic that is well known: “there must be enough time to consider measures leading to more sustainable food systems”. More studies would be needed “before a political or regulatory decision is taken. This is all the more relevant when it comes to establishing or tightening regulations, such as those to reduce the use of pesticides, fertilisers or antibiotics”.
