Children between 4 and 8 years old eat relatively the most sugars, so they are the earliest in the year at the maximum. Every year, they eat an average of more than 31 kilos of sugar, according to figures from the RIVM. On average, children between 9 and 13 years old go over the maximum on 26 July. Only the elderly eat less sugar than the recommended maximum.

A new WHO Directive recommends that adults and children reduce their daily intake of free sugars to less than 10% of their total energy intake. A further reduction to less than 5% or about 25 grams (6 teaspoons) per day would provide additional health benefits.
