#summervacation   #summer   #burns   #kids   #warning

Summer holidays

It's again. #summer and that means we go back to the campsite or stay in our garden. The camping table is set outside. The inflatable pool is filled with water for cooling. The barbecue and atmospheric fireplaces are lit again. Sounds fun, but there is also a danger in all these companies.
Plastic surgeons and The Dutch Burns Foundation warn of the #threats that can arise at #kids in the #summervacation . This year it is striking that especially young children with #burns are included.

Figures

In 2018, 783 people with acute burns were admitted to one of the Burn Centres in the Netherlands. In total, 9,000 people end up in Emergency Care every year and 92,000 people visit a general practitioner for combustion.
Of the 783 people who were acutely admitted, a quarter of this group consisted of children under five years of age.
According to plastic surgeons and Dutch Burns Foundation, the chance to #burns to be the highest in the summer vacation, due to the following causes:

  • - hot weather
  • - drought
  • - fire pits
  • - gel burners
  • - firebowls
  • - atmospheric fireplaces
  • - garden hose
  • - camping table

Risks

You risk the following reasons for the following reasons:

  • Fire baskets, firebowls, atmospheric fireplaces, gel burners are open fires and often spirits are used to stirr things up and that's where things often go wrong. There is a spark and the risk of burning is very high. Especially if your baby is wearing a dress made of nylon fabric or synthetic fabric. That catches very fast.

  • Camping Tables
They are often wobbly and not as sturdy as a salon or dining table. Cups of hot tea or coffee put on such a camping table are not firm. Young children who can just stand or walk often grab a camping table. That table is going to wiggle and this creates a high risk of combustion.

  • Garden hoses

The garden hose is also a huge risk of combustion. The water that is still in the garden hose is boiling hot, and when you open the tap, it comes from boiling water.! Bathtub is filled with water and your baby goes in and can burn ugly.

Also, the garden hose often contains old water which has stood still, which causes a legionella bacterium to get into the water, which can get you very sick.
So it's important to flush your garden hose well before using it and don't put your baby in the bath until you first check the water temperature.
